The first European explorer to encounter Costa Rica was the Great Navigator himself, Christopher Columbus. The day was September 18, 1502, and Columbus was making his fourth and final voyage to the New World. As he was setting anchor off shore, a crowd of local Carib Indians paddled out in canoes and greeted his crew warmly.

The Costa Rican culture is a vibrant blend of indigenous heritage and Spanish colonial influence, with a dash of Jamaican, Chinese, and other immigrant cultures. The result is a nation of laid-back, friendly, and happy people.

The Arabica coffee plant was brought to the Central Valley of Costa Rica in the late 1700’s. Cultivation spread slowly and it became the first Central American country to have a coffee industry. Coffee growing soon surpassed cacao, tobacco, and sugar in importance, and by 1829 it had become the major source of foreign revenue. The rich volcanic soil, cool moist climate, and high altitude of the mountains is the perfect place for growing excellent coffee.

What is single origin coffee?

Single origin coffee is coffee grown within a single geographic origin. This means the beans come from a single farm, or from a single country. Single origins allow the roaster to cultivate unique flavors that reflect the origin of the beans. Single origins are a great way to experience the flavors of places you might never have the opportunity to visit!
