Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico. It is a country consisting of striking features and a strong indigenous culture. It is recognized by its Mayan ruins, lakes, and volcanoes. For years Guatemala endured a bloody civil war between the US-backed government and leftist rebels. Guatemala faces many social problems and is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. More than half of the population is below the national poverty line and just over 400,000 people are unemployed.
Coffee production in Guatemala started in the 1850s. It ranks second in the world with the amount of high grade coffee it produces. Over half of its coffee is exported to the US. Picking coffee is a vital source of income for local families. Typically children and their families use the money earned from picking coffee to help cover the costs of education.
Our single origin Guatemalan coffee is farmed, harvested, and sundried in the volcanic region of Guatemala. It is sweet and versatile – bursting with flavors of rich chocolate, roasted almonds, vanilla, and brown sugar. All of our Guatemalan beans are direct trade, so the money goes directly to the farmers – which in turn is helping build and support local communities and villages in rural Guatemala. A portion of these proceeds goes directly to support the Well Mother, Well Baby Program in Pena Blanca, Guatemala.
Thank you for helping bring change to the world, one bean at a time!
What is single origin coffee?
Single origin coffee is coffee grown within a single geographic origin. This means the beans come from a single farm, or from a single country. Single origins allow the roaster to cultivate unique flavors that reflect the origin of the beans. Single origins are a great way to experience the flavors of places you might never have the opportunity to visit!
